Joe Elliott

Biography

Joe Elliott is an English musician who became the lead vocalist and a founding member of Def Leppard. Raised in Sheffield, he was 18 in 1977 when a missed bus led to a meeting with Pete Willis and an audition for Atomic Mass; the group decided he should sing rather than play guitar, and he came up with the name Deaf Leopard, which was later altered to Def Leppard. By 1979 the band were helping to lead the new wave of British heavy metal. Their 1980 debut, On Through the Night, reached the UK Top 15, while 1983's Pyromania and its single Photograph made them a household name and helped drive 1980s pop-metal. Hysteria arrived in 1987, and its single Love Bites topped the Billboard Hot 100 in 1988. Elliott later fronted the Bowie tribute group the Cybernauts and Down 'n' Outz, and in 2019 joined Def Leppard's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
