John Deacon
Biography
John Deacon is an English retired musician best known as the bass guitarist for Queen. Born in Leicester and raised in Oadby, Leicestershire, he played bass in a local group called The Opposition before studying electronics at Chelsea College in London. He joined Queen in 1971 and, from Sheer Heart Attack onward, wrote songs for the band's albums, including You're My Best Friend, Another One Bites the Dust and I Want to Break Free, plus co-writes such as Under Pressure, Friends Will Be Friends and One Vision. He also contributed guitar, keyboards and piano on records. Following Freddie Mercury's death in 1991 and The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert (1992), Deacon performed only occasionally with Queen and retired in 1997 after recording No-One but You (Only the Good Die Young). Queen entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001, and Deacon joined the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2003.

Getting ready for a role
Deacon's best-known invention is the "Deacy Amp", which he assembled in 1972 from electronic parts he discovered in a skip. He and May used it across Queen's recording career, and many "guitar orchestras" on Queen albums feature this amplifier.
About the name
For Queen's 1973 debut album, Deacon was billed as "Deacon John" so he would "sound more interesting". Starting with Queen II, he requested his real name be used, and that was done from then on.
A first
A Brazilian species in the genus Heteragrion was given the name Heteragrion johndeaconi in 2013, a tribute to Deacon's musical and songwriting skills. It was one of four flatwing damselflies in that genus named for his bandmates.
A change of course
Deacon gained a First Class Honours degree in Electronic Engineering in 1971 from Chelsea College in London, which is now part of King's College London.
