Plot summary
The Kulkus are a hostile alien species, infected by a lethal virus, and human blood is what they need to develop an antidote. Their ambassador negotiates with Earth's governments: eight million people handed over by the nations, divided among them, and in return the planet is spared. While other countries empty their prisons to meet the quotas, the United States fills its share by lottery. Stephen Chase's daughter Heather is among those picked. Chase joins the human resistance, whose leaders are Blair and Alex, and offers them his research and alien material recovered in 1947 in exchange for her liberty.
