Plot summary
In 2009 a meteor shower kills American astronaut Jeff Hale, who wakes inside a jade-green bubble beneath the water. A cloaked figure presses a staff to his forehead and floods his mind with images; he crawls ashore onto a beach littered with metal canisters of clothing. People from many lands and eras emerge from the water, and all of them understand one another's speech except a lone Neanderthal. The known world, Hale learns, is the bank of a huge river, where anyone who ever lived on Earth is reborn in the prime of life, with food provided and a mild climate. He becomes close to Alice Liddell Hargreaves, Mali, a former slave, and Lev Ruach, a Holocaust survivor. Other cloaked figures appear, but their purpose is unknown.
