Theodore Kosloff
Biography
Theodore Kosloff was a Russian-born dancer, teacher, choreographer, and actor. Born in Moscow in 1882, he trained at Moscow's Imperial Theater. He toured internationally and joined the Diaghilev Ballet Company in 1909, becoming a frequent partner of Tamara Karsavina. A touring company took him out of Russia in 1910, and in Paris Gertrude Hoffmann discovered him, hiring him to perform with her and create Ballets Russes-inspired dances. He later headed a touring troupe named the Imperial Russian Ballet and choreographed Broadway shows including The Passing Show of 1915, A World of Pleasure, and See America First. Cecil B. DeMille brought him into film in 1917, and his debut came in The Woman God Forgot opposite Geraldine Farrar. Usually cast as an exotic type, he appeared in Why Change Your Wife? (1920). His last major screen part was in Madam Satan (1930), and after retiring from acting he worked as a choreographer and opened ballet schools. He died in 1956.
