Plot summary

The Velvet Underground came together in early-1960s New York, where music, art and film avant-gardes overlapped. Its core members were Lou Reed, John Cale, Sterling Morrison, Doug Yule and Maureen Tucker. Andy Warhol took on managing and promoting the group and persuaded them to add the German singer and model Nico. The documentary looks at the cultural scene that shaped the band and the musical and cinematic influences behind it. It follows the band's formation and weaves interviews with Cale and Tucker and with musicians the band inspired together with archival music and film material. Though the band found little commercial success at the time, it left a significant mark on underground, experimental and alternative music, and on the development of punk and new wave.
