Plot summary
Bob Dylan says he hardly remembers the Rolling Thunder Revue, and finds it impossible to get at what it was about. In 1975, with the country's mood bleak after Vietnam and Watergate and the Bicentennial approaching, he brings together musicians he knew from the Greenwich Village folk scene and takes them on the road through New England and parts of Canada. Stefan Van Dorp, a European filmmaker, shoots the tour. Larry Sloman, sent by Rolling Stone, tries to work his way into Dylan's inner circle. Scarlet Rivera takes Dylan to a Kiss concert, and he begins performing in Whiteface makeup. Allen Ginsberg, with beat poetry out of fashion, tries to remake himself as a singer and songwriter. Joan Baez sings with Dylan and dresses in his stage outfit, hoping to revive their romance.

The film mixes fictional and real interviews without telling viewers which is which: Martin Von Haselberg plays the invented filmmaker Stefan Van Dorp, Sharon Stone plays a fictionalized version of herself, and Michael Murphy reprises his congressman Jack Tanner from Robert Altman's Tanner '88.- The bulk of Rolling Thunder Revue is outtakes from Bob Dylan's own film Renaldo and Clara (1978), shot during the same 1975 concert tour the documentary covers.
