Plot summary
Through a newspaper photograph, Draifa recognized the son of her dead lover and summoned him to Tara. The elder Athos Magnani, whom his son closely resembles, is remembered in the countryside town as a resistance hero, killed by unknown Fascists in 1936, before the younger man was born, and a statue of him stands in the square. Draifa wants the death solved or avenged, and the town repeats that Fascists were to blame. Every question the son asks is met with evasion or hostility. He hears that a fortune teller had foretold his father's death and that a warning letter was found unopened on the corpse.
