Plot summary
Caterina Silveri is an American opera singer. Her son Joe is fifteen, and her husband, Douglas Winter, is distant and takes little part in raising the boy. In New York, Joe sees Douglas die suddenly, and the loss leaves him angry and distraught. Caterina does not want to remain in Manhattan, so she moves to Italy with Joe, where she has opera engagements. There Joe drifts into a dangerous circle and grows addicted to heroin. Grief-stricken, Caterina searches for a way to pull him back toward a healthier life. She tries again and again to come closer to him emotionally, hoping that her presence will outweigh the drug.
