Plot summary
Bill Dunnigan, a Hollywood press agent, travels by train with the body of the actress Olga Treskovna to Coaltown, Pennsylvania, where she grew up and where she asked to be buried. He was in love with her and never said so. The town's undertaker resents her, because her father's grave was never fully paid for. Dunnigan faces pressure from the undertaker and from the priest of the larger St. Leo's, but he goes instead to Father Paul at the small Polish church of St. Michael's, as Olga wanted. Father Paul shows him the hilltop graveyard where her parents lie. In flashback, Olga is pulled from a nightclub chorus line to stand in for a temperamental star, and Dunnigan, convinced of her talent, persuades the producer Marcus Harris to give her an audition.
