Adeline De Walt Reynolds
Biography
Adeline De Walt Reynolds was an American actress who came to films late, playing Jimmy Stewart's grandmother in her first screen role, Come Live with Me, released in 1941. She was born in Iowa in 1862 and had wanted to act from the age of five, though her farmer father objected. At 64 she entered the University of California, Berkeley, graduated with honors in French at 68, and studied acting there. Blanche Yurka found an agent for her, and a part in Landslide led Clarence Brown to cast her. She appeared in about two dozen pictures up to 1955. The Tuttles of Tahiti (1942) cast her as Charles Laughton's mother, and in Son of Dracula (1943) she was the mysterious Madame Zimba. In Going My Way (1944) she played aged Mother Fitzgibbon. Her last film role was in The Ten Commandments, released in 1956. Television work followed through the 1950s, and her final role came at 98.
