Plot summary
A beer run to a Los Angeles convenience store becomes a hostage standoff when masked terrorists calling themselves S.P.L.I.T. Image seize the place and take Cliff Spab, his friend Joe Dice and three other people captive. Among the hostages is a teenage girl named Wendy Pfister. The intruders carry a video camera and tape their captives' words and actions, demanding that the footage air uncut on television around the world or the hostages will be killed. As the standoff with the police stretches through weeks, Cliff shows no fear of his captors' threats, and the phrase he repeats to them while the cameras roll turns him into a media icon.

- Director Jefery Levy wanted Nirvana's "All Apologies" on the soundtrack and asked Kurt Cobain to screen a rough cut of the film. Cobain responded well to it, but Levy never got permission to use the song because of Cobain's suicide.
