Plot summary
In Verona, the Montague and Capulet families have been enemies for a long time. A street fight between them angers the Prince, who warns that further trouble will cost them their lives. Romeo Montague loves Rosaline, a niece of Lord Capulet, and ignores his cousin Benvolio's advice to forget her. Romeo enters a Capulet gathering that night with Benvolio and Mercutio, hoping to find Rosaline. He sees Juliet Capulet instead, and she returns his feelings. The Nurse interrupts them, and Romeo discovers that Juliet is Lord Capulet's daughter.

- Director Carlo Carlei said the script was written for a 20-year-old actress and that all nudity and lovemaking were cut once 14-year-old Hailee Steinfeld was cast as Juliet.
- Paul Wesley had been offered the role of Count Paris, but in February 2012 it was announced that Tom Wisdom would play him.
- The Villa Farnese's garden casino, not the main villa which is a museum, was used for the Capulet home; its loggia was Juliet's balcony, its columns dressed with artificial greenery and roses that Romeo climbed.
