Plot summary
Public schools in the United States depend on good teachers, and research puts the teacher ahead of every other school factor in a child's future success. Pay is another matter, since almost a third of American teachers hold a second job to make a living. Over three years, hundreds of teachers are filmed; four of them, in different regions, are followed at length. Their accounts are woven with interviews with other teachers, students, families and education leaders, and with animated facts about the profession. Teachers describe how hard it is to draw talented newcomers into the work, and the question put to the country is whether teaching can be re-valued as a prestigious, financially competitive profession.
