Plot summary

By late 1950, General MacArthur's Allied command has pushed the North Korean army back up the peninsula toward the Yalu River, which separates Korea from China. The US 1st Marine Division leads the advance and camps around the Chosin Reservoir, ready to attack again. On 27 November, China enters the war and strikes by surprise with roughly 120,000 troops. The marines at the reservoir are outnumbered and surrounded in subarctic temperatures. Veterans who were there recount the seventeen days of combat and survival, and their accounts are joined by commentary from historians and by archival footage. The engagement ranks as the first major armed clash of the Cold War.
