Plot summary
In Hackney, London, Rocks and her little brother Emmanuel live with their mother, who is bringing them up alone. Rocks has a close group of friends, and a new girl at school, Roshé, unsettles them by taking a liking to her. Then their mother goes, leaving a letter promising to return and an envelope holding far too little money. Rocks tells only Sumaya, her closest friend. When a social worker appears outside the house, Rocks asks Sumaya's family to let her and Emmanuel stay the night, unwilling to let anyone find out the two of them are on their own.
