Plot summary
Rachel Adams loses an important client for Ryan Hayden's company and lets Ben Geringer carry the blame for it. Guilt pushes her out drinking with her friend Alyssa Miller, and she decides to admit what she did. Before she can, a man known only as the Stranger seizes both women and locks them in his barn, where he asks whether they are clean. He draws blood from each of them and feeds the sample to a creature he keeps behind a locked door. Ben, meanwhile, has been dismissed by Hayden and is short of money. He brings in his wife Amy, his brother Tommy and an acquaintance, Paul Nolan, to abduct Hayden's daughter for ransom, even though he does not trust Paul, whose inside contact they need.

- While filming A Horrible Way to Die, A. J. Bowen learned from Ti West that producer John Norris wanted to cast him in Rites of Spring.
- Bowen found out Reynolds wanted Anessa Ramsey in the cast, so he phoned her because they are friends. The two had worked together on The Signal, and Bowen looked forward to a non-antagonistic role with her.
