Plot summary
William Foster and Ed Whittle work as biomedical researchers at Bionyne Corporation in Puerto Rico. They are working to put a dead soldier's mind inside a powerful android called Subject 345, and the attempt fails when the soldier recoils from the android body. William's boss Jones warns that the shareholders will shut the project down if it cannot be made to work. On the way to a boating trip, a car crash kills William's wife Mona and their children Sophie, Matt and Zoe. William asks Ed to bring him Bionyne equipment so that he can extract their neural maps and clone replacement bodies for them. Only three cloning pods are available, so one of the family cannot be brought back. Ed begins the seventeen-day cycle the new bodies need to mature.
