Plot summary
Kenna Rowan served six years for vehicular manslaughter after the crash that killed her boyfriend, Scotty Landry. Back in her hometown, she moves into a low-income apartment complex, where her landlady presses a kitten on her, and befriends Lady Diana, a young neighbor whose father is in prison. Diem, the child Kenna gave birth to while incarcerated, is being raised by Scotty's parents, Grace and Patrick Landry, who keep her from their house. Ledger Ward, Scotty's lifelong best friend and a former NFL player, runs a bar in the building that once held Kenna and Scotty's favorite bookstore and lives across the street from the Landrys, where he acts as a surrogate uncle to Diem. He is the one person who does not turn Kenna away.
