Plot summary
By 700 AD, the rivers split Northern Europe in two. Above them live the Frisians, Saxons and Danes; the Franks hold the land below. The Franks want what even the Romans never managed, the conquest of all Europe, and they carry Christianity as a weapon against the pagan peoples. Their target is the main trading center of Europe, where Redbad's father, the Frisian king Aldigisl, rules. Redbad and Pepin of Herstal, lord of the Franks, are sworn enemies, and their power struggle becomes war. To resist the Frankish advance, Redbad must gather an army of Vikings strong enough to face it.

- Redbad earned back only €332,785 of its 8 million euro budget in its first month, making it the biggest box office bomb in the country's history.
- In May 2018 YouTube and Facebook told the producers of Redbad they would not show its trailer because it was considered offensive to large groups. Producer Klaas de Jong said he also got hundreds of angry mails from Christians who disagreed with the film's depiction of historical events.
- In November 2018 the producers of Redbad announced they were suing YouTube for 200,000 euros because illegal copies of the film had been viewed half a million times on the website.
- Redbad was shot in 42 days and used more than 10,000 extras, which is a record amount for a Dutch production.
