Plot summary
Shane Cooper and his pregnant wife Alice move to Red Hill, where he begins work as a police officer. The head of the local force, William "Old Bill" Jones, treats him coldly from the start. On duty he cannot produce his gun and is wounded because he will not fire at an armed boy. Word then arrives that Jimmy Conway, a convicted murderer Old Bill arrested for killing his wife, has broken out of prison. Old Bill expects Jimmy to come back for revenge, so he arms his officers and local volunteers and tells them to fire on sight.
