Plot summary
Four American soldiers serving in World War II witness their platoon sergeant murder an innocent civilian. The killing is a vicious one. Afterward the four are sent out on a reconnaissance mission that amounts to a suicide mission. A local partisan leads the patrol. He is an elderly man whose loyalties are indeterminate, and that uncertainty deepens the fear and disorder among the Americans, who are hunted by an enemy they cannot see.
