Plot summary
Ray and Liz share a council flat in the Black Country with their sons, Richard and Jason, during the Thatcher years. The household lives on the margins of society, on the outskirts of Birmingham, where the days are shaped by things the family cannot control. Ray drinks and Liz smokes, and around them the family keeps to rituals of its own and breaks social taboos. The story unfolds in three episodes, with Jason seen at two years old and again at ten, and Richard at ten and in his teens. Across them, the film stays with the parents, Ray and Liz, with their relationship, and with what it does to Richard and his younger brother Jason.
