Plot summary
Lee Min-jun is a young diplomat in South Korea's foreign ministry. A colleague, Secretary Oh Jae-seok, was taken captive in Lebanon and has been missing since. The government keeps the case quiet: a presidential election is coming and the country is bidding to host the Olympics, and word of a hostage would cost it. A phone call then shows that Oh Jae-seok is still alive, and the captors ask for 2.5 million dollars. Min-jun is given the money and sent to Beirut on an unofficial mission to bring the hostage home. There he is joined by Kim Pan-su, a local taxi driver.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The real kidnapping behind Ransomed was covered up by the Chun Doo-hwan government to avoid bad press before the 1987 South Korean presidential election and the 1988 Summer Olympics bid; the terrorists demanded a 2.5 million U.S. dollar ransom, and full details were to stay classified until 2047.
- Ransomed was made during the COVID-19 pandemic, and Morocco let the production enter the country by charter flight even though widespread border restrictions were in place at the time.
