Plot summary
In June 1592, a month after the clash at Sacheon, the daimyo Wakisaka Yasuharu takes command of the Japanese fleet at Busan, charged with stopping the Joseon commander Yi Sun-shin. Survivors of that fight describe a fully enclosed Joseon warship they call bokkaisen, and the flaws it showed: a fixed dragon head at the bow that jams after a ramming attack, and weaker armor along its flanks. Wakisaka agrees to join the campaign alongside the other Japanese fleets. At the Left Jeolla Navy base in Yeosu, Yi meets his admirals. Won Gyun, who commands the Western Fleet, wants a defensive stand rather than a strike, and once word spreads that Pyongyang has fallen and the king has fled to Uiju, other commanders side with him. Yi works out a crescent formation he calls Crane Wing.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Unlike The Admiral, which was actually filmed on a boat floating on the sea, the naval battle scenes in Hansan: Rising Dragon were shot using visual effects, with the VFX set built at the Gangneung Speed Skating Stadium used for the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.
- Two days before its theatrical release, Hansan: Rising Dragon recorded 147,909 presales, breaking the record for most presale tickets sold in recent history, which had been held by the Oscar-winning Parasite (2019).
- For the naval battle scene in the latter part of the film, subtitles were added to the Korean dialogue because it was not audible over the sound effects and background music of the battle.
