Plot summary
The company B.R.O. Capital takes on Purl, an earnest pink ball of yarn, for an entry-level position, and she is excited to work there at first. The people she works with barely notice her, no matter how hard she tries to fit in. When her coworkers head out for a group lunch, she is left behind on her own. Photographs of the company's capital team show a group of white men in the same style of power suit, their hair cut alike. The photographs of the capital team prompt her to change her appearance and her personality to resemble the men in them.

- Purl is one of the first original Pixar productions made without former Chief Creative Officer John Lasseter, who had left Pixar in June 2018 after allegations of sexual misconduct towards female employees.
- Writer/director Kristen Lester drew the story from her own early years in animation, where she was the lone female, saying that to fit in she "sort of became one of the guys" until she worked on a team with female Pixar employees.
- Purl was the first short of Pixar's SparkShorts program, in which Pixar employees are given six months and limited budgets to produce a short animated film.
- Purl became the first Pixar short to have a soundtrack released when Pinar Toprak's score came out on March 15, 2019; it was also the second Pixar non-film product with a soundtrack, after Toy Story of Terror!.
- Lester chose to make Purl a ball of yarn because of her yarn bombing hobby, which had shown her how versatile yarn could be.
