Plot summary

Nick has spent seven years inside the drug ring of Kwan, who controls the local heroin trade, and has risen to handling cargo deliveries. Kwan, whose health is failing, makes Nick his protégé, and the trust placed in him, the money and the standing pull Nick toward the life he is only pretending to live. His superiors order him to stay in place rather than move on the evidence he has gathered, so that the man behind Kwan can be identified and the whole network brought down. He also becomes involved with Fan, a heroin addict raising a young daughter. What he is and what he plays grow difficult to separate.
