Plot summary
On a flight home after an appearance at the MTV Video Music Awards as Fartman, Howard Stern finds himself next to a woman named Gloria, who seems repelled by him. Taking that to mean she thinks he is a moron, he starts to tell her his life story. As a boy he took verbal abuse from his father Ben, and a visit to his father's recording studio left him set on a career in radio; he grew up quiet and socially awkward. He studies communications at Boston University and becomes a disc jockey at the campus station, where he meets Alison, his girlfriend. His first job after graduation is at WRNW in Briarcliff Manor, New York, where he becomes program director.

- For the scene where Howard Stern finds out that Alison is pregnant, director Betty Thomas approached him and told him she had been diagnosed with ovarian cancer, which was in fact a lie; Stern's genuine shock produced what Thomas was looking for.
- An earlier Howard Stern film collapsed in 1993 after he became unhappy with the idea of making a PG-rated film and had disputes with New Line Cinema over merchandising rights; its cancellation left him depressed: "I'd gone on air and said, 'I'm going to make a movie.' I sort of felt like a liar."
- After the wrap party, Stern booked a rhinoplasty consultation for early September 1996, but Thomas informed him that several scenes had to be re-shot and a change in his appearance would affect continuity, and Reitman asked him to avoid surgery until production was complete as Paramount owned his face.
- About 25 women, including some topless dancers, auditioned for the small role of Mandy, a seven-line part requiring full frontal nudity; the part ultimately went to porn star Jenna Jameson.
- To promote the film in the European markets, Stern attended the 1997 Cannes Film Festival in Cannes, France, appearing with two topless women and a 40-foot inflatable picture of himself placed on the shore; French security threatened to shoot the balloon down before it was taken down.
- Studio executives, believing Stern was too scared to appear as himself on screen, floated the idea of having Jeff Goldblum play him instead.
- Stern, who had the power of final script approval, went on to reject around 22 revisions of the screenplay, sometimes from day to day, as he grew dissatisfied with their content.
