Plot summary
Rose Hovick is a willful, resourceful, domineering stage mother. Her aim is her young, blonde, beautiful daughter June, and Rose means to make the girl a vaudeville headliner, stopping at nothing to achieve it. To get her noticed, she drags her around the country, and June's older sister, Louise, comes along. Louise is shy and awkward, with no gift for singing or dancing, and by her mother's reckoning the less talented of the two. One ally is the agent Herbie Sommers, who works to place the act. With his assistance, Rose manages to secure bookings on the prestigious Orpheum Circuit.

- Gypsy Rose Lee's son, Erik Lee Preminger, drove this version into production and was its main research source. He had tried ten years earlier to film it with Bette Midler, who had always wanted to play Rose Hovick, but the rights needed the approval of five entities, and one obstacle was Arthur Laurents, who wrote the musical's book and had hated the 1962 film version.
