Plot summary

Pat Clifton is a postman in the village of Greendale, where he makes his rounds with his cat Jess. He hopes to take his wife Sara on a delayed honeymoon to Italy and expects a bonus from the Special Delivery Service to pay for it. His new boss, Edwin Carbunkle, cancels all bonuses and wants to replace the service's human workers with machines. At home, Pat's son Julian shows him the television talent show You're the One, whose host, Simon Cowbell, announces auditions in Greendale. The winner receives a trip to Italy and a recording contract. Pat enters and his singing voice wins him a place in the finale against Josh. Josh's manager, Wilf, is jealous and wants Josh to win. Carbunkle creates robotic doubles of Pat and Jess to cover Pat's round while he competes.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Postman Pat: The Movie (2014)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • In 2025, Postman Pat: The Movie became a viral meme on social media platforms such as Twitter, where users ironically re-evaluated its plot of Pat being replaced by robots, seeing it as mirroring fears of AI replacing human jobs.
  • Gary Barlow was originally going to provide Pat's singing voice and Kate Winslet was originally cast as Sara Clifton, but Ronan Keating took over Pat's singing and Susan Duerden replaced Winslet as Sara.
  • The planned stop-motion and CGI mix was abandoned when Cosgrove Hall Films, the company behind the newer Postman Pat series, was shut down by ITV plc on 26 October 2009, so the film became fully CGI.
  • Craig Ferguson contacted the filmmakers asking to be cast because of his love for the Daleks from Doctor Who, and he voiced a fictionalized version of himself and the robot "Not a Dalek".
  • Director Mike Disa created the villain Edwin Carbunkle specifically for Peter Woodward after deciding that Woodward had a good villain voice.
  • Peter Woodward had allergies during the table read and developed Carbunkle's voice from his congestion, using a "slightly adenoidal" tone instead of a deep, breathy, evil one.
  • The film's very limited budget, unlike that of studio animated films, led to the script being rewritten around Pat Clifton's family and the film scaled down to fewer sets and characters.
