Plot summary
Kate and Alex live in New York City with their teenage daughter, Abby, and run a store that deals in used modern furniture. They have bought the apartment next to theirs, where the cranky Andra still lives. Andra's granddaughters are Rebecca, a mammography technologist, and Mary, a cosmetologist. Kate is uneasy about the money she earns from sellers who do not know what their furniture is worth, about homeless people in her neighborhood, and about her own comfortable life. She takes on volunteer work that leaves her weeping, and her donations to homeless individuals sometimes backfire.
