Plot summary
Jake Carson runs a smokejumper crew in a remote part of the California woodlands, leading Mark Rogers, Rodrigo Torres and Axe into dangerous rescues. When the crew pulls three children out of a burning cabin, Rogers points out that under the Safe Haven Laws the young ones stay with them until a parent or guardian collects them: fifteen-year-old Brynn, ten-year-old Will and three-year-old Zoey. Division Commander Richards shortlists Carson to take over his post, the job Carson has wanted. The children run wild around the station while Carson tries to finish the application form. Dr. Amy Hicks, a local environmentalist and his former date, objects that the crew draws water from endangered toad habitat, and she declines to take the children off his hands.
