Plot summary
The wealthy J.R. Randolph hires private investigator Maggie McNamara of Lyon Investigation to trace his niece Barbara, who disappeared with her boyfriend after the pair slipped into a closed US Army test site. Questioning people in the area, Maggie meets Paul Grogan, a local environmentalist, who shows her the compound and its empty pool. Maggie decides to drain the pool to see what lies at the bottom. A woman with a crowbar attacks them to stop the draining, and the pool holds piranhas that can live in both fresh and sea water. With the fish loose in the river, Paul thinks of his daughter Susie at a scout camp downstream, and he and Maggie set out to warn the resort.
