Plot summary
Dr. Frank Linden keeps a life-size anatomical dummy named Pin in his office and speaks through it, using ventriloquism to explain bodily functions to his children, Leon and Ursula, without embarrassment. The doctor is otherwise cold with them, and Leon, who has no friends, comes to believe the dummy is alive. He sees his father's nurse use Pin for sex, and grows to hate women he considers promiscuous. He guards his sister closely, and when she becomes pregnant as a teenager their father performs an abortion on her. At eighteen, Leon is caught talking with Pin in the voice he has learned, and his father takes the dummy to a medical school lecture. Driving there, the doctor and his wife are killed in a crash. Leon secretly takes Pin from the crash scene.
