Plot summary
Her mother Hillary, an author, and her father Peter raise Phoebe and her younger sister Olivia in a household that takes both girls for prodigies. At school, though, Phoebe, nine, is teased by other children and cannot keep to the rules. She becomes friends with Jamie, a boy the other students bully. A family outing to a performance of Swan Lake leaves Phoebe captivated by the music and the costumes, and she turns her attention to Miss Dodger, the school's unconventional drama teacher, whom the other teachers dislike. Phoebe wants a part in Miss Dodger's production of Alice in Wonderland. Miss Dodger turns her away at first for arriving late, then accepts her after learning about her hand-washing rituals. Rehearsals go smoothly while her impulses continue away from the stage.
