Plot summary
Alike's mother, Audrey, dislikes the clothes her seventeen-year-old daughter wears and the friendship with Laura, who is open about being a lesbian. Alike is settling into being a butch lesbian herself, at ease in baggy clothes and male underwear. Audrey, a Christian, tries to keep Laura's influence away and pushes Alike toward Bina, a girl from their church. Alike's father, Arthur, a police detective, is gentler with her, treating her changes as a phase and warning her to avoid the area around a lesbian bar. Alike begins to spend more time with Bina than with Laura, which annoys Laura, while Arthur's late nights from work set off fights with Audrey at home.
