Plot summary
A Maratha commander, Raghunath Rao, defeats Hyderabad's Nizam and recruits the artillery chief Ibrahim Khan Gardi. In 1758 the empire he serves is at its peak under Peshwa Balaji Baji Rao. Back in Pune, Sadashiv Rao Bhau is made finance minister rather than the Peshwa's son Vishwas Rao. Sadashiv finds that Najib ad-Dawlah, who rules Rohillakhand, owes the Marathas a large unpaid tax debt, and Najib turns for help to the Afghan ruler Ahmad Shah Abdali. After Najib kills the Maratha general Dattaji Shinde, the Peshwa orders a campaign to defend Delhi. Raghunath Rao will not lead the campaign without more funding, so Sadashiv leads the army north with Vishwas Rao beside him, seeking allies.
