Plot summary
Havildar Ishar Singh serves in the 36th Sikhs Regiment, and his unit is stationed at Gulistan Fort along the frontier that separates British land from Afghanistan. The British officer in command scorns Indian troops and envies Ishar Singh's fighting skill. On patrol the men come upon Pashtun tribesmen under Saidullah, who mean to kill a married Afghan woman for refusing the husband her family chose. The officer will not let his troops interfere, so Ishar Singh goes against that order, fights the tribesmen and takes her to safety. When the Afghans then strike Gulistan, his superiors blame him for the broken peace and send him to Saragarhi Fort, a signal post linking Gulistan with Lockhart, where the soldiers have let their discipline slip. Saidullah, meanwhile, is gathering the tribes.
