Plot summary
Ashwat Raina, an officer of the Research and Analysis Wing, urges India's ministers in 1995 to answer Chinese missile tests with a nuclear test of their own. The ministers ridicule the idea, and when a plan is rushed through without him and an American Lacrosse satellite photographs the preparations, he is dismissed as the scapegoat. Three years later, with a new prime minister in office, the PMO secretary Himanshu Shukla offers him a second attempt. Ashwat picks five specialists from the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, the Defence Research and Development Organisation, the Indian Army, the Indian Space Agency and the Intelligence Bureau, and takes them to Pokhran to build the test site. Spies working for the CIA and the ISI learn of the activity and plant bugs in his guest house.
