Plot summary
Aviva, thirteen, is awkward and sensitive. Joyce, her mother, is warm and loving; her father Steve is a regular man whose temper can flare now and then. The story opens at the funeral of Aviva's cousin Dawn Wiener, who went to college and grew estranged from her younger sister Missy, who stays away from the service. Dawn's brother Mark gives the eulogy, and Dawn's parents, who mistreated her as a child, sit weeping in the audience. Some years on, Aviva longs for a baby of her own. She sleeps with Judah, who is a friend of the family, and gets pregnant. Joyce and Steve are horrified, and they press Aviva to end the pregnancy.
