Plot summary
Alma Harris and her daughter Elizabeth are estranged; Elizabeth lives in Sydney, where she keeps a political-hostess household. Another birthday without seeing her is more than Alma can bear, so she travels to Sydney for a visit. Alma has no place in the receptions and duties that fill Elizabeth's days as a hostess, and the greater sympathy comes from Elizabeth's own daughter. In a burst of rebellion Alma buys a supercharged hotrod and drives toward Melbourne, trying to remember to keep to the left side of the road. Con artists and gangsters cross her route, along with a ponytailed stranger in a camper.
