Plot summary
After a divorce that leaves him unable to see his daughter, Yoshio Shiraiwa goes back to his hometown of Hakodate in Hokkaido. He signs up at a vocational college to learn carpentry and draws unemployment payments while he studies, and he finds classmates in similar circumstances. Among them is Kazuhisa Daishima, another trainee. One day Yoshio comes across Satoshi Tamura, an unconventional woman, arguing with her boyfriend by the roadside; she imitates the courtship display of an ostrich, and the gesture drives the man off. Yoshio is amused, and the two exchange a look before he walks on. Kazuhisa later takes Yoshio to a cabaret club, where he meets Satoshi again, this time dancing, and the two grow close.
