Plot summary
One hundred years earlier, Titans appeared and killed most of the human race. The survivors built a ring of walls and lived in peace behind them. In the village of Monzen, Eren tells Armin and Mikasa that he longs to see what lies beyond the Outer Wall. After a failed attempt to get near the wall, Souda, captain of the Garrison, explains that a scouting regiment is being formed to go past it. Then the Colossal Titan batters the wall, and Titans pour into the village, eating people and healing from their injuries. Two years later, Eren and Armin join the Scout Regiment alongside Sasha, Jean and other recruits, and the team moves out into a town of the Outer Wall under the Military Police commander Kubal.

- The filmmakers wanted a faithful adaptation, but manga author Hajime Isayama pushed for changes, including new characters and moving the setting to Japan, so the two films could stand alone because "the story has already been told", and he added elements later used in the manga.
- A software problem froze one subtitle, "I've been waiting for this day!", for most of Part 1 at theatres in San Francisco, Ohio, Kentucky, Texas and Wisconsin; in response, Funimation announced it would hardsub Part 2 and all future releases.
- In July 2021 the Oktyabrsky District Court in Saint Petersburg banned the film, along with Happy Tree Friends and Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion's Revenge, claiming it could harm children's mental health and spiritual and moral development.
- Actor Satoru Matsuo's time as a cast member in the film became the subject of the 2022 biographical television series Lost Man Found, in which he was portrayed by David Chen.
