Plot summary

Kate is between jobs, and the abuse she endured from her husband, Mike, has left her with traumatic visions. She wants to get as far from her past as she can. Her best friend Nickie points her toward Nickie's brother Earl, an experienced park ranger, and Kate takes a post inside a fire lookout tower in Idaho, where the rules require her to check in with Earl twice a day. The solitude does not settle her. She misses a report, then breaks protocol to put out a small fire burning near the tower, and Earl grows weary of her erratic behavior and sets out to find someone to replace her. On errands to a market she meets Dan, another ranger, and Reggie, a widower who lives alone in the mountains.
