Plot summary
Luis Vargas owns a plantation in Cuba under Spanish rule and writes to Julia Russell in Delaware to come to him as a mail-order bride. When her ship docks she looks nothing like the photograph she sent, and she says she wanted a man who cared for more than a pretty face. Luis confesses his own deception: he let her believe he was a poor clerk rather than a wealthy landowner. They are married at the church within hours, and he gives her access to his accounts. Julia's sister Emily grows worried by her silence and writes; a detective, Walter Downs, arrives from Wilmington saying Emily hired him to find her sister and asking to see Julia.
