Plot summary
After their home is foreclosed, Martin, a widowed father, wakes his children Ella and Charlie on an early morning in 2008 and loads them into the car. He tells them only that they are going on a road trip. With the family dog along, the three of them drive across the American West. At a restaurant Martin deliberately gives the dog human food, which Ella objects to. He puts the dog down at an SPCA shelter.

- Omaha's epilogue draws on Nebraska's July 2008 safe-haven law, which decriminalized handing children over to the state; because the law set no age limit, parents traveled there to drop off older children, and 35 were abandoned before it was rewritten.
- Screenwriter Robert Machoian, a Brigham Young University professor of photography, first conceived Omaha in 2008, but his script was rejected by a Sundance screenwriter's lab in 2013; he later premiered The Killing of Two Lovers at the 2020 festival.
