Plot summary
Nikolay Myachikov is an investigator whose superiors want his post for Yuriy Proskudin, a younger man promoted from above. Prosecutor Fedor Fedyaev gives Myachikov one month to show he can still handle difficult cases. Myachikov's friend, the engineer Valentin Vorobyov, is also preparing to retire, but after his colleagues give him a farewell he chooses to stay. Hearing of Myachikov's trouble, Vorobyov proposes that the pair stage a spectacular crime for Myachikov to solve himself. Their first attempt, the removal of a Rembrandt from a museum, draws no notice at all. Vorobyov then suggests a fake robbery at the bank where his neighbor Anna Pavlovna works as a courier.
