Yuriy Nikulin

Biography

Yuri Nikulin was a Russian comedian and film actor, a mime and circus clown who also served as artistic director of the Moscow Circus and hosted a television show. Born in Demidov, in Smolensk province, he was the son of a theater and circus writer and director. Drafted into the Soviet Army in 1939, he served in a tank unit until 1946, then spent years failing to enter an acting school before the Moscow Circus admitted him with a pantomime. He graduated from its circus school in 1950 and made his performing career there, becoming best known for Leonid Gayday's comedies of 1961 to 1971. The Diamond Arm (1969) was a record box office hit voted the best Russian comedy in a 1995 poll. He also appeared in Andrei Tarkovsky's Andrei Rublev (1966) and in dramas such as They Fought for Their Country, and later hosted the show Bely Popugai. He was named National Artist and died in 1997.
