Yuriy Yakovlev

Biography

Yuri Yakovlev was a Russian actor who became one of the Soviet Union's most popular performers during the 1960s to the 1980s. Born in Moscow, he trained at the Shchukin Theatrical School of the Vakhtangov Theatre between 1948 and 1952 and joined the company of that theater. His stage work included Triletsky in Chekhov's Play without a title, Karenin in Anna Karenina, the lead in Kasanova, and Pantalone in Carlo Gozzi's Princess Turandot, a part he first played in 1963. The role of Prince Myshkin in Ivan Pyryev's The Idiot brought him notice. He went on to appear as Ivan Vasilyevich Bunsha in Leonid Gayday's Ivan Vasilievich: Back to the Future (1973) and in Eldar Ryazanov's Ironiya sudby, ili s legkim parom!, and he was seen in Kin-dza-dza! (1986). His honors included the title People's Actor of the USSR, State Prizes of the USSR and Russia, the Order of Lenin, and the Red Banne of Labour order.
