Afonya (1975) on Netflix

Plot summary

Afanasy Borshchov works as a plumber in the city and spends his days and nights dodging work and hunting for a drink. Kickbacks from clients bring him before the local committee, and he hands strangers borrowed foreign or old-fashioned names so they will find him interesting. At a pub he meets Kolya, a plasterer, and comes home in such a state that his girlfriend leaves him and he cannot remember whom he drank with. He begs for student interns from the vocational school and is given two; they walk away after one day of his methods. At a dance he meets Katya Snegireva, a nurse who knows of him through her brother, but he is drawn to older women. On a work call he meets Helen and falls for her at once.
